Newcomer Parent Resources - Multiple Languages

RESOURCES FOR NEWCOMER PARENTS AVAILABLE IN MULTIPLE LANGUAGE

Giving birth is a life-changing event on its own. Combine it with a new environment, an inability to find information in one's own language, new cultural values and expectations, and new social structures. This is the experience of many newcomers when giving birth or raising young children in Canada for the first time.

Many newcomers do not speak or read English or French. They are not aware of the many materials, supports or services that are available to them as expecting or new parents. There is now a dearth of high quality material available in multiple languages. It is increasingly important for service providers to be able to answer questions and concerns of new parents, and to be able to support them with materials written in their own language.

The Best Start Resource Centre, a key program of Health Nexus, has adapted and translated some of its best brochures and booklets on topics related to pre-conception, pregnancy and early child development, into ten languages:

* Arabic         * Simplified Chinese            * Filipino
* French        * Hindi                                 * Punjabi
* Spanish       * Tamil                                 * Urdu

These adaptations were done in consultation with community advisors from each cultural group, and validated through field testing with members of these communities. Here is a list of the titles, adapted and translated from the original English and French:

* Giving Birth in a New Land - A Guide to Women who are new to Canada
* Is There a Baby in your Future?
* Pre-term Labour - Signs and Symptoms
* Work & Pregnancy Do Mix!
* Healthy Eating for a Healthy Baby
* Life with a New Baby is Not Always What You Expect
* My Child and I - Attachment for Life
* Baby Wants...
* Shaken Baby Syndrome
* Postpartum Depression

Additional multiple languages resources:

* New to Canada? Having a Baby? poster
* Abuse and Pregnancy
* Important Signs to Watch for if you are Pregnant
* Folic Acid Poster
* Breastfeeding Your Baby  - Fridge Magnet for nursing mothers
