NATIONAL MISSING CHILDREN’S DAY

 

Today is “National Missing Children’s Day” in Canada, as declared by the Solicitor General in 1986. The Winnipeg Police Service Missing Persons Unit proudly supports Child Find Manitoba and their Green Ribbon of Hope campaign that runs throughout the entire month of May. The campaign is designed to draw public awareness to the issue of missing children in our Province and right across Canada. Child Find provides green ribbons to be worn by anyone wishing to show their support and concern for missing children.

 

The Green Ribbon became a recognized symbol for Child Find folllowing the abduction and subsequent murder of 15 year old Kristen French in 1992. This horrific crime shocked the community of St. Catharine’s Ontairo as well as the rest of Canada. Kristen’s fellow students and teachers developed the concept of the “Green Ribbon of Hope” in her honor. Green is regarded as the colour of hope and epitomizes the quest for the safe return of all missing children.

 

Every year thousands of Canadian children are reported missing. These children are either runaways or victims of parental or non-family member abductions. Over 4,000 Manitoba children are reported missing every year. Thankfully the majority of these children are safely recovered but unfortunately some cases remain open for years and some children are never found.

 

In conjuction with “National Missing Children’s Day”, Child Find Manitoba and the Winnipeg Police Service Missing Person’s Unit are requesting the public’s assistance in locating Winnipeg’s missing children. As a result we are featuring the following long term and more recent missing children’s cases. Please take time to study these faces as statistics have proven that the public plays a critical roll in locating missing children. 

 

THE MARYK CHILDREN – C08-184322

 

Emily CABLEK last saw her two children on August 16, 2008. Dominic and Abby were on a court ordered visitation with their father Kevin MARYK when he abducted them. Investigators believe they remain in their father’s custody at this time and that they may have been taken out of the province or country. Investigators also believe that Kevin MARYK may be in the company of his nephew, Cody MCKAY. MCKAY, who was living with his uncle (MARYK), disappeared at the same time the abduction occurred and he is believed to be an accomplice in this crime.

These photos were taken when Dominic was 7 years old and his sister 5 years old. Dominic is now 9 years old and his sister Abby is now 7 years old. Their appearances, including their height, weight, hair color and length could now be very different.

 

Investigators are of the belief that acquaintances, friends, or possibly even family members may have knowledge as to the whereabouts of the children. Certain individuals may also be enabling them to stay hidden from the authorities by providing them with shelter or financial support. Anyone doing so or anyone having knowledge of this occurring, is asked to come forward and provide the necessary information required to locate Dominic and Abby and reunite them with their Mother.

 

TANISHA LAPORTE – R10-42591

 

The Winnipeg Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance in locating a 12 year old female, Tanisha LAPORTE. She was last seen on Tuesday May 23,2010 at 10:15 p.m. in the North End of Winnipeg.

 

The Winnipeg Police Service Missing Persons Unit considers LAPORTE to be a child in need of protection as she is at high risk of being exploited, victimized or harmed and investigators are concerned for her well-being.

 

 

Tanisha LAPORTE (12)

 

LAPORTE is described as: Métis, approximately 5 ft tall, 100 lbs, with long brown hair and brown eyes. She has a pierced left nostril with a sparkly stud. She was last seen wearing a black sweatshirt with dark skinny jeans and white shoes.   

 

AGNES LINKLATER – R10-33707

 

The Winnipeg Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance in locating a 16 year old female, Agnes LINKLATER. She was last seen on April 30, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. in the Fort Richmond area of Winnipeg.

 

The Winnipeg Police Service Missing Persons Unit considers LINKLATER to be a child in need of protection as she is at high risk of being exploited, victimized or harmed and investigators are concerned for her well-being.

 

Agnes LINKLATER (16)

 

LINKLATER is described as: Aboriginal, approximately 5 ft 2” tall, 150 lbs, with straight, medium length red hair and black eyes. She was last seen wearing a dark blue sweatshirt with white trim, blue jeans and black Nike running shoes.

Main, Higgins CPR Underpass - Condition

Below is an April/10  photo (east side, facing north)  Illustrating the crumbling condition of the Main/Higgins underpass.  Brad Neirinck of the City of Winnipeg (986-7950) has advised that it's structurally safe because it's of steel construction, but  that it's CPR's responsibility to maintain it structurally and in safe condition.   Brad advised that the local engineer for CPR is Ron Tumak at 946-3436.

Driftwood Piles along Red River - Fisheries & Oceans Canada

 As to whether  there are plans to clean up some of the numerous driftwood  piles  (some piles consisting of dozens of trees) along the bank of the Red River between Riverfront drive and St. John's Park  here's the response from Chris Hurley of Cnr. Lazarenko's office.

Apparently, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has asked/instructed the City of Winnipeg that driftwood accumulations along the riverbank are deemed riparian habitat and are not be removed.

More than 40 formulations of children's medications are being recalled in Canada, the United States and 10 other countries for failing to meet quality standards.

The recall applies to over-the-counter liquid medicines produced by McNeil Consumer Healthcare under the brand names Tylenol, Tylenol Plus, Motrin, Zyrtec and Benadryl.

In Canada, the impact is limited to all lots of Children's Motrin and infants' Motrin liquid suspension products and Children's Tylenol Cough & Runny Nose liquid suspension.

Here is a release describing the Canadian products affected by the recall.

McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a division of consumer-goods giant Johnson & Johnson, issued the recall after consultations with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA doesn't yet list the recall on its website, nor does Health Canada, but McNeil said in a statement Friday that no adverse health effects have been reported so far as a result of the affected medications.

Rather, the recall has been issued because some of the drugs "may contain a higher concentration of active ingredient than is specified," while others may be tainted by particles, the company said.

The voluntary recall applies to all lots that have not yet expired and that were produced in the U.S. for distribution there, in Canada and in 10 other countries. Here are all the affected brands:

    * Tylenol Infants' Drops (7 different formulations).
    * Children's Tylenol Suspensions (8 formulations).
    * Children's Tylenol Plus Suspensions (9 formulations).
    * Motrin Infants' Drops (3 formulations).
    * Children's Motrin Suspensions (11 formulations).
    * Children's Zyrtec Liquids in Bottles (5 formulations).
    * Children's Benadryl Allergy Liquids in Bottles (1 formulation).

The company is advising consumers to stop giving the products to children as a precautionary measure.

Convenience Store, Mountain Ave Robbery Arrest

COMMERCIAL ROBBERY ARREST              C10-74641

As previously released, on April 11^th, 2010 at approximately 2:30 a.m., Uniform members were dispatched to a convenience store in the area of the 700 block of Mountain Avenue regarding a robbery incident.

 

It is alleged two male suspects armed with bear spray attended to the business and confronted the store clerk. An undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes were stolen. The store clerk received minor injuries as a result of bear spray being discharged within the store

 

As a result of an ongoing investigation by the Major Crimes Unit, Thomas SUTHERLAND, 18 years old, of Winnipeg has been charged with Robbery with a Weapon, Possess Prohibited Weapon and a 16 year old male has been charged with Robbery with a Weapon, Unauthorized Possession of Weapon, and Fail to Comply with Sentence.
